Santiago Ortiz-Piazuelo

My current work aims to address my personal culture and examine how it can be dissected. I was born in Colombia, and have lived in New Orleans, Louisiana; Little Rock, Arkansas; Nashville, Tennessee; and currently in Knoxville, Tennessee. I am interested in identity, and how it is informed by both biology and culture. I started by making works that included my face with letterpress over them in an effort to speak directly to my bilingual/bicultural identity. From there, I have focused on the visual overlap of letterforms from Spanish and English to stand for the intersection of culture and to explore whether the combination of these different languages creates a stronger identity or a dilution of the two.
