Artist Statement:
"In my paintings, I delve into the profound connection between Black women and the healing elements exuded by the Southern Black Garden and memorial waters. Using oil, glitter, and familial fabric, I create a revitalized perspective on what it means to exist in historical southern regions charged with painful remembrance. By situating Black femmes amidst vivid florals and racialized landscapes, I expose life that is not predetermined by the framed perspectives of the social world."
Chase Williamson is an MFA candidate in Painting + Drawing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
She centers the interconnection of Blackness, womanhood, & marginalized identity through her painted compositions. Born and raised in Franklin, Tennessee, her southern living experience is a major propeller for her work. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Art degree from University of Tennessee, Chattanooga in 2022, where she studied Studio Art & Psychology. Chase is fiercely passionate about creating mirrored representation; during undergrad, she painted the cover and interior artwork for the children’s book, “Creative God, Colorful Us”.
