For those familiar with the vernacular of the South, "reckon" is a term often peppered throughout our speech as we conjecture over ideas of what the past held and the future will hold, often with a sense of unsureness and apprehension. The subtle use of noncommittal speech like reckon is an acknowledgment of something that every Southerner knows well: even the most deliberate intent, or the sincerest recollection, is beholden to the variability and consequences of time. The works in this exhibition wrestle with these notions of time, confronting ideas such as memory, decay, and loss by engaging with phenomena such as aging, the cyclical nature of growth and decay, and the imprint that new life makes when it arrives and the cavern that it leaves when it is gone.
