Symphony Medley, Jasmyn Mullins

On October 8th Austin Peay’s graduating fine arts senior Symphony Medley will present her Senior Thesis exhibition: I Am Not A Walking Stereotype in the Beach Student Gallery. The artist states, “My work is about the social and beauty standards that African-American women face on a daily basis. My show represents African-American women breaking the negative images caused by stereotypes, colorism, sexism, and the passive aggressive racism that surrounds them. I would like my audience to have an eye-opening experience and a sense of empathy regarding the effects of these issues on African-American women. It should not be as difficult as it is to be a woman in our society.”

Also this week, Austin Peay graduating senior Jasmyn Mullins, will present her Senior Thesis exhibition; The Untold Narrative at APSU’s Art and Design building’s Beach Student Gallery room 201. Located on the second floor of the Art and Design Building, the gallery will be filled with comic books, paintings, a storyboard. The artist has been in three other gallery shows at APSU, and this will be her first featured solo exhibition. In The Untold Narrative the artist states, “I seek to broaden the spectrum of black women through various genres of comics: horror, mystery, comedy, and adventure. I want to break the stereotypes that have been placed on black women in the mass media.”

These exhibitions will be on view from Monday through Thursday October 8th-12th in the Barbara Beach Gallery on the second floor of the Art + Design Building on the campus of Austin Peay State University. There will be an opening reception on Monday, October 8 from 5pm-7pm. The students will make short remarks about their exhibitions during the opening reception. The exhibitions are free and open to the public.
