McLean Fahnestock

"In her first exhibition at The New Gallery, McLean Fahnestock delves into themes of exploration, paradise, knowledge through five stunning sculptures that provoke us to question the narratives and known world surrounding us. Rooted in landscape imagery, this body of work does not seek to rival nature, but to instead re-order and re-present it. Compelled to look closer, and with new eyes, we watch as the stars become land, islands become icebergs, storms become sea. The known universe mirrors, shifts, and merges. As philosopher Emil Cioran posits, “Il n'y a pas un autre monde. Il n'y a même pas ce monde-ci.” (There is no other world. There is not even this world.) In this exhibition, our recognizable world has been disassembled, reconfigured, and realigned into a captivating new variant. Something between documentary and fantasy, between travelogue and make-believe." - Sara Estes
