Bio:
Courtney Cox is an award-winning international artist working in fiber arts with a specialization in hand embroidery. Using the humble tools of needle and thread, Cox turns thousands of stitches into vibrant pieces rich in intricacies. Often focused on portraiture, her work embraces color, which, unlike working with other mediums, cannot be mixed when using thread. Studying the planes and angles of the face, she leverages texture and stitch direction to communicate about her subjects. Her non-figurative pieces utilize tiny vignettes and a variety of stitches to indicate emotion and movement.
Her work has been awarded, published, and exhibited across four continents. In 2021 and 2022, she won awards at the Woodlawn Needlework Show, the largest needlework exhibition in North America. Cox’s international publications include Stitch Magazine, distributed by the U.K. Embroiderer’s Guild, All Stitched Up!, distributed by Inspirations Studio in Australia, Textiel Plus, a fiber arts magazine distributed in the Netherlands, and others. Likewise, her work has been exhibited across North America, Europe, and in Brazil. In 2020 she was juried into the international modern embroidery art organization, the Society for Embroidered Work, based in the United Kingdom. Her other memberships include the Chattanooga Fiber Arts Guild, the Association for Visual Artists, and Where Are The Women Artists?.
Courtney Cox spent most of her childhood in Austin, Texas. As an adult, Cox has lived in Malmo, Sweden, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles, California. She spent a year backpacking Europe and the Middle East before returning to the United States where she converted a minivan and traveled for two years. She currently resides in Chattanooga, Tennessee where her love of travel and diverse experiences lends depth to her art.
Originally from Austin, Texas, Cox has traveled widely, visiting 29 countries. She now resides in Chattanooga, Tennessee with her husband and dogs.
Statement:
Working as a fiber artist with a specialization in hand embroidery, my art addresses modern observations through an ancient lens.
Using the everyday tools of a needle and thread, my social commentary art tells the stories of society one thread at a time. My work often uses portraiture to investigate and communicate about issues and experiences. These pieces are often stitched as a response to my own emotions as I observe and move through the world.
Self-taught in the art of hand embroidery, my work does not consciously adhere to any rules or traditions apparent in the legacy of hand embroidery. In my work I have combined hand embroidery with watercolor and found objects, as well as employing unusual mounting, such as onto a backward canvas or flyswatter, and the cutting away of materials. In every piece, my careful use of needle and thread invokes a sense of discovery.
